Carl James Michalski, 10-month-old son of Thomas Meidam and Hannah Michalski, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, March 26, 2019. Carl was born three months premature in Neenah on May 12, 2018. He was a very happy baby who warmed the hearts of others with his loveable smile and constant “talking.”
Carl is survived by his parents, Thomas Meidam and Hannah Michalski, of Marion; his twin brother, Jackson Michalski; maternal grandmother, Margaret (Jim Inderdahl) Michalski, of Tilleda; paternal grandparents, Jim (Lori Peters) Meidam, of Little Chute, and Valerie (John) Brunner, of Westboro; great-grandparents, Wesley (Diana) Tucker, Pat Meidam, and Sharon Michalski; aunts and uncles, Gregory (Kate) Ghent, Johnathon (fiancé Anna) Michalski, Deidra Hanson, Cassidy Brunner, Amber (Aaron) Zschaechner, Anthony (Stephanie) Springstroh and Andrew Springstroh. He is further survived by numerous other relatives and friends of the family.
Carl is preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Carl Michalski; and great-grandparents, Harry Michalski and LeeAnn Ghent.
Funeral services will be held at Swedberg-Wendt Funeral Home, 251 S. Cecil St. in Bonduel, on Tuesday, April 2, 2019, at 6 p.m. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery in Embarrass. Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Tuesday, April 2, 2019, from 4 p.m. until the time of service. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund is being established.
Dorothy Jean Paterick, 96, of Shawano, passed away on Monday, March 25, 2019. Dorothy was born in Hickory Corners on Nov. 27, 1922, daughter of the late Robert and Clara (Torbergson) Dieck. In 1942, Dorothy was united in marriage to Norman Paterick in Gresham. Norman preceded Dorothy in death just five years later on Sept. 30, 1947. Dorothy earned a Master of Science in teaching from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. She was the first female to earn a master’s degree from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. She loved her job in teaching. She taught for 39 years before retiring, her teaching including time in Tigerton, Leopolis, and Shawano schools. Dorothy was a very active member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Shawano, where she held the offices of CCW president, school board member, and renew leader. She also gave her time to numerous other organizations throughout the community, including time as the Delta Kappa Gamma president, Shawano-Gresham Teachers president, Senior Songbirds president, Shawano Historical Society secretary, and served on the board of directors for the Friends of the Library. Throughout her life, Dorothy enjoyed golfing, bowling, flower gardening and collecting angels and teacups.
Dorothy is survived by two children, Diane Cooper, of Milwaukee, and Jim (Barb) Paterick, of Chippewa Falls; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. She is further survived by numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
Dorothy is preceded in death by her husband, Norman; sons, Mike Paterick and Tom Paterick; her parents; and seven siblings.
A memorial service for Dorothy will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, April 3, 2019, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Shawano with the Rev. Tom Farrell officiating. Inurnment will be in Forest Hill Cemetery in Wisconsin Rapids at a later date. Visitation will be held at the church on Wednesday from 11:30 a.m. until the time of the service.
Merlyn took his first breath in Heaven on March 20, 2019, surrounded by his loving family.
Born in a farmhouse in Dorchester, Wisconsin, on December 2, 1933, Merlyn was the son of Norwegian cheesemaker. As the youngest of six, his father passed away when he was only 4 years old. He was raised by his mother, and a combination of older siblings, aunts and uncles. Memories of Ontanogan, Michigan, Glidden and the Lund family farm, southeast of Shawano and Riverside School filled his childhood with adventure and practical education. He often shared that he was thankful to have grown up when he did.
After moving to Mendota, Illinois, as a young teen, and then to San Jose, Illinois, he was employed by the Hanson Dairy, his brother’s cheese factory. It was there that he met and married (Donnabel) Donna Houser, the love of his life, and together they forged a loving bond that would last for 67 years.
After moving to Neenah, Merlyn dedicated himself to Beloit Manhattan for 42 years. He and Donna raised three sons. They shared their love of the outdoors with their sons, by spending many hours fishing, hunting, snowmobiling, and camping. They traveled to almost all of the states in the union, and established life-long friendships all along the way. Merlyn’s love of family and togetherness flowed to his grandchildren, who now share it with their children. After retiring, he and Donna spent many winters in the Arizona region, and then enjoyed babysitting their great-grandchildren in the summer months, as family was everything to Merlyn.
Merlyn is survived by his lifelong companion and wife, Donna; sons, Rick and Steve (Chris) Hanson; grandchildren, Emily (Ben) DeMoulin, Anna Hanson (fiancé Ben Geyer), Brad (Kelly) Kaster and Nick (Liz) Kaster; great-grandchildren, Hunter, Reid, Levi, Trevin, Hayli, Aliyah and one great-grandchild on the way.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Hulda and Carl Hanson; siblings; Floyd, Harlow, Irene, Isla and Virginia; and son, David.
A celebration of Merlyn’s life will be held on Friday, April 5, 2019, at Calvary Bible Church, 1450 Oakridge Road, Neenah. The visitation will be held at the church from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m., with the service immediately following at 1:00 p.m. A luncheon will follow. Burial will be at the Jerusalem Lutheran Cemetery at Lunds when weather permits.
The family would like to give a heartfelt “thank you” to the ThedaCare (Theda Clark) ER, ICU, the doctors from Fox Valley Pulmonary Medicine, as well as Eric, Evan, Jess and other nurses and hospice team for their tender care of Merlyn over these past few weeks.

Paula K. Hoch, 50, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, Feb. 7, 2019, at her home in Marshfield.
A service will be at 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 6, 2019, at Rembs Funeral Home, with Pastor Preston Tippen officiating. The visitation will begin at 11 a.m. until the time of service. Burial will take place in Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery, Marshfield.
Paula was born on Oct. 24, 1968, in Antigo to the late Benedict and Dorothy (Olson) Eder and attended Shawano schools. She was united in marriage to Robert Hoch on July 30, 2001.
Paula was a longtime employee at the Perkins Restaurant in Marshfield. She was a very gifted singer who now sings with the angels. She loved her pets, Penny and Kitty.
Survivors include her best friend, Robert Hoch; daughter, Samantha Hoch; brothers, Ben (Linda) Eder, of Buffalo, New York, and Brad (Bonny) Eder, of Bonduel; nephews, Mike, Mark, and Kenny Eder and Eric Unger; lifetime friend Ann (Meverden) Kartali; many other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Pamela Eder.

Morton R. “Mort” Gentz, 95, Appleton, formerly of Gillett, passed away Friday, March 22, 2019, at home. His family was at his side.
Mort was born Nov. 30, 1923, to the late Julius and Kathryn (Weidner) Gentz at Bowler. He graduated from Bowler High School in 1941. On June 14, 1944, he married the love of his life, Lorraine Hoefs, at Zion Lutheran Church in Zachow. He was a proud World War II Veteran, serving his country in the U.S. Air Force as an aerial front nose gunner on B-24 Bombers in the Pacific Theater of War.
Following his military service, he and Lorraine worked for Red Owl Stores. They owned and operated Gentz’s Flowers and Greenhouses in Gillett, retiring in 1978. They went on to spend 22 years at Finnegan Lake, building a home and caring for flowers, trees and multiple vegetable gardens.
In 2000, they moved to apartment living. Mort was active in volunteering for Boy Scouts, Northern Gardeners, Revitalize Gillett, Oconto County Historical Society and was a paid-up life member of Krause-Simpson American Legion Post 300. He was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church serving on council and various committees of the church. He was a co-chair for the church’s 100th anniversary celebration. Mort and Lorraine were honored as grand marshals for the 2005 Fourth of July parade.
He is survived by his wife, Lorraine, of Appleton; son Michael (Cindy) Gentz, of Green Bay; daughter, Wendy (Kurt) Redlin, of Appleton and Alabama. He also leaves his grandchildren, Monica Fischer, of Gillett; Ai (Kyoto) Saito, of Florida and Japan; Trisha Snow of Oshkosh; Ori-Anna (Mark) Ramsey of West Bend and Brandon Redlin of Neenah. Mort is further survived by his nieces, Judy (Robert) Kroening, Leopolis; Marilyn (Todd) Hanson, Shawano; Sally (Todd) Popp, Appleton; and numerous other nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Leila (Robert) Doran; brother, Tony (Tana) Gentz; brother-in-law. Maynard (Bernice) Hoefs; and beloved grandson, Ryan Fischer.
Memorial visitation will be Saturday, April 13, 2019, from 9-11 a.m. at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 101 W. Main St., Gillett. A memorial service will follow at 11 a.m. Final rest will be in Zion Lutheran Cemetery, Zachow.

Joan M. Rosenow, 77, of Gresham, passed away on Thursday, March 28, 2019, at Ascension St. Clare’s Hospital in Weston surrounded by her family.
Joan was born on May 26, 1941, to the late Claude and Hazel (Kessen) Bowman. She was raised by her stepdad, Morris Bowman. On Aug. 24, 1957, she was united in marriage to Roger Rosenow at Peace United Church of Christ in Clintonville. Joan and Roger attended Shawano High School, dropped out, but then returned to high school to earn their diplomas. Joan went on to graduate from UW-Green Bay with a bachelor’s degree in elementary education. She worked as a fourth and fifth grade teacher at Bowler Elementary School for 22 years. Joan enjoyed her many years of teaching and above all else, spending time with her family and friends.
Left to cherish her memory are her husband, Roger; three sons, Randy, Rick and Russ Rosenow; three grandchildren, Sheldon (Amy) Rosenow, Risk (Olivia) Rosenow and Crystal (Lester) Moesch; nine great-grandchildren, Parker, Mallory, Roselynn, Revel, Rouge, Roman and Jayden Santiago, and Chance and Gary Moesch; her sister, Bonnie (Sydney) Maas; her brother, Peter Bowman; her special friend, Mary Hanson; and many nieces and nephews.

Mabel E. Schulte, 96, of Shawano, formerly of Montana, passed away peacefully on Thursday, March 28, 2019, at The Cottages in Shawano.
Mabel was born July 31, 1922, in Augusta, Montana, a daughter of John and Virginia (Brown) Manix. As a Montanan, Mabel came from strong stock. Her younger years were spent growing up on a ranch on the Dearborn, attending school in the summer months. This region always held a special place in Mabel’s heart and memories. At the age of 10, her family moved to the Town of Augusta. She regaled stories of playing sports in high school, especially basketball where her teams were the great tournament teams. Living in a small town provided Mabel the confidence to try many activities. Alas, she lived a very happy childhood.
From 1941 to 1945, Mabel attended the University of Montana, graduating with a degree in accounting. These were the years of World War II, and the women attending college at this time were empowered to participate in all-college clubs and activities. Sports, the Newman Center, and her sorority filled her non-scholastic time. Following college, Mabel met Elmer Schulte, a smokejumper in Montana, formerly of Gresham. Prior to their marriage in June 1947, Elmer reenlisted in the Air Force, and the family became a career military family. As duty stations changed, they lived in many interesting cities, states and countries. With each new assignment, Mabel embraced her new surroundings and friendships, making the most of her time spent in each location. While the opportunities were limited due to military assignments, Mabel worked when she was able and was known to teach math to GIs while living in Labrador, Canada.
Perhaps Mabel’s most cherished accomplishment, certainly felt by her children, was that of being a mom. Mabel became a single mom to her four children in 1965, and did a stellar job. It was during this time Mabel became active with a Catholic group of men and women for divorced, single, and widowed individuals. She and her children lived in the Washington, D.C., suburb of Alexandria, Virginia, where Mabel worked full-time for the federal government. She initially worked at the fledgling branch of the Office of Economic Opportunity (originator of Head Start) and retired from the Department of Labor at the age of 75. Mabel was so respected in her career, that she was rehired as a financial consultant to locate misplaced grant monies.
Mabel was known for her fun-loving personality and her accepting manner of others. For this reason, she had many lifelong friendships and was enjoyed by family. She was a proud alumna of the University of Montana and attended her 68th college reunion. She loved playing cards, any cards, and playing and watching sports. Realizing her family’s history was important, Mabel was instrumental in recording her family’s genealogy. She also helped organize a World War II Veterans Memorial wall in Augusta. As a deeply faith-filled individual, she attended daily Mass and lived her faith in her words and actions. In 2016, Mabel moved to Shawano to reside at the Cottages Memory Care Center.
Mabel is survived by her beloved children, Pat Schulte, Katherine Crawford, Lois (Ron) Brewster and Steve (Joelle) Schulte. Grandma Schulte/Aunt Mabel was loved by many, and also as a daughter, sister, mother-in-law and friend. How lucky we were she lived a long life.
A funeral Mass for Mabel will be held this summer in Augusta, Montana.

Mary Jane Hoefs, 56, of Cecil, passed away on Tuesday, March 19, 2019, in Neenah. Mary was born in Middleton on Jan. 11, 1963, to the late John and Mildred Gilson. Mary enjoyed traveling the United States. She collected Coca-Cola items, mining for stones, crystals and gems, jewelry and many other treasures. Mary loved her animals, but most of all, she loved spending time with her family and friends.
Mary is survived by her daughter, Casey Hoefs; significant other of many years, Paul White; stepchildren, Zachary White, Seth White and Jennifer Murdock; one brother, Bill (Susie) Gilson; two nieces, Courtney and Niki; and one nephew, Will. Mary is further survived by other relatives and many friends she considered family.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
A celebration of life will be held at Deer Camp and Pavilion, N4096 County Road K, Shawano, on Saturday, April 13, 2019, starting at 12:30 p.m.

Neil L. Jacobs, 74, of Shawano, passed away at home on Wednesday, April 3, 2019. Born in Sturgeon Bay on Aug. 16, 1944, Neil was a son of the late Howard and Gretta (Tousey) Jacobs. Neil is a graduate of Bowler High School and continued his education to work as an industrial electrician. Neil enlisted in the United States Army in 1965 and served his country honorably in Vietnam. He was a proud veteran of the 25th infantry division. Neil was united in marriage to Claudia Arvey. He loved sports and enjoyed coaching little league baseball for many years. He was very artistic and had an eye for detail, putting the level to just about everything. Muncie could fix or build just about anything and would often say, “The only thing I can’t do is put toothpaste back in the tube.” He retired from Faith Technology in Appleton in 2009 and battled cancer courageously for over 10 years. He was a wonderful father and grandfather who never missed an opportunity to teach valuable life lessons. His great sense of humor and quick wit will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
Neil is survived by his wife, Claudia; children, Heidi Arvey, of Green Bay, and Collin (Kelly) Arvey, of Shawano; grandchildren, Elliott, Marshall, Brendan and Rhiannon; his sister, Euretta “Buzzi” Rollins; and his brother, Gearold “Bear” (Vickie) Jacobs. He is further survived by numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, many friends, and his faithful companion, Hunter.
He wass preceded in death by a son, Brian Jacobs; his parents; and siblings, Clyde Jacobs, Sr., Rosella Schaaf, Sugar Zimmerman, and his twin sister, Nelda Jacobs.
A memorial service will be held at noon on Monday, April 8, 2019, at Swedberg Funeral Home in Shawano with the Rev. Matthew Weber officiating. Military honors will be conducted by the Mohican Veterans outside the funeral home following the service. Inurnment will be in Red Springs Cemetery at a later date. Richard Lee “Dick” Johnson, 87, of Shawano, passed away on Monday, April 1, 2019, in Appleton. Born in Brill on Dec. 20, 1931, Dick was the son of the late Edward and Dea (Durkee) Johnson. Following high school, Dick enlisted in the United States Navy where he played tuba in the Naval Band and served on the U.S.S. Boxer for three years. He married Dorothy I. Wilhelm in Fall Creek, and together they raised two sons. Dorothy preceded Dick in death in 1993. Dick was blessed to find love again and married Marlene Malueg Eggert at Zion Lutheran Church in Shawano on April 22, 1995. Dick was a wonderful man with a strong faith and a love for music, the water, traveling and his family. An accomplished tuba player, Dick was a member of numerous bands over the years and had a fondness for polkas and music from the big band era. He also enjoyed anything to do with the water; fishing and boating were two of his favorite pastimes. This inspired his work in the marine industry. He later founded a successful airport limousine service, Regal Limousine, in Sarasota, Florida. He treasured the memories from many wonderful trips over the years. One of Dick’s hobbies was building model boats, mainly tug and sail boats, which are cherished by his family. Dick was a fighter and an optimist; he never complained and saw the best in everyone he met. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. His quick wit and contagious laugh will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
Dick is survived by his wife, Marlene; two sons, Jeff (Sandy) Johnson, of Stillwater, Minnesota, and Brad (Lori) Johnson, of Sarasota, Florida; three grandchildren, Anna (Justin) Oseka, of Nebraska, Lauren Johnson and Drew Johnson, both of Minnesota; twin great-granddaughters, Kate and Kinley; two brothers, Larry Johnson and Jerry (Darlene) Johnson, of Madison; and one sister, Veronica Prell, of Eau Claire. He is further survived by other relatives and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his first wife Dorothy and his parents.

Danae J. “Dan” Clark, 68, of Shawano, passed away on Tuesday, April 2, 2019.
Dan was born on Nov. 13, 1950, in Shawano to the late Fred and Mildred (Roloff) Clark.
Dan’s hobbies included deer and turkey hunting, archery and anything he could do outdoors.
Survivors include his children, Ryan Clark, Shawano, Dana (Ben) Ritchie, Pella, and Emma (Josh Haut) Clark, Gresham; grandsons, Wyatt and Austin; brothers, Larry (Betty) Clark, Calvin (DeeDee) Clark, Leroy (Brenda) Clark, and Ron (Pat) Clark. Dan is further survived by many nieces and nephews as well as special friends, Jon Baker and Jon and Debbie Westphal.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Donna and Janet; and brothers, Marlyn and Mike.

Corbin Benjamin Miller, only 11 days old, fought to live to the very end, but passed away on Wednesday, April 3, 2019, at St. Vincent Hospital in Green Bay. Corbin came into this world in Shawano on March 23, 2019, 3½ months premature, the infant son of Joshua Miller and Felicia Pranke.
Corbin is survived by his parents, Josh and Felicia, of Shawano; his sister, Kaelyn; maternal grandparents, Phillip and Tammie Pranke, of Two Rivers; paternal grandparents, Danny and Becky Miller, of Shawano; his uncles, Christopher (Jenna) Miller, of Antigo, Ben (Aly Zwiers) Pranke and Adam (Sarah Hull) Pranke, both of Two Rivers; his aunts, Brittany (Aaron) Hose, of Antigo, Elizabeth (Ray) Lewis, of Elton, and Tabitha (Ryan Reynolds) Pranke of Two Rivers; his maternal great-grandparents, Ervin and Betsy Pranke, and Vern and Fran West, all of White Lake; and many cousins.
A memorial service for Corbin will be held on Saturday, April 20, 2019, at 11 a.m. at Mickelson Funeral Service of Shawano. The Rev. Aaron Hose will officiate. Alice Darling died Wednesday, April 3, 2019, at Homme Home in Wittenberg. She was 84 years old. She was born on April 16, 1934, in Burnett, a daughter of Fred and Anna (Altman) Schwartz. She married Milo Darling on Oct. 9, 1954, in Milwaukee. He preceded her in death on Jan. 8, 1994.
She was raised in Burnett and graduated from Juneau High School in 1951.
Alice lived in Milwaukee where she was employed at Walgreen’s and Briggs and Stratton. In 1972, she moved to Bowler where she and her family operated Kal’s Bar and Restaurant for several years. For 16 years, she worked at Wisconsin Veneer and Plywood in Mattoon, retiring in 1995.
Alice loved helping people and was a hard worker. She would take care of and visit elderly neighbors, deliver vegetables from her garden and corn from the Schultz farm. She also enjoyed writing letters, sending cards for all occasions, framing pictures and making quilts. She would do anything for anyone that she knew was in need.
Survivors include a daughter, Patricia Darling Miller, and her husband, Jeff Miller, of Bowler; two sons, Michael (Kathleen) Darling and Rodney Darling, both of Bowler; four grandchildren, Jeffrey Miller, Glendale, and special friend Missy, Woodbury, Minnesota, Luke (Sarah) Miller, Bowler, Marie (Antwon) Ellis, Portage, and Dawn (Todd) Borchardt, Weston; four great-grandchildren, Brayden Myron, Michael Jeffrey, Benjamin Doc and Lucy Patricia Miller; three brothers, George Schwartz, Horicon, William (Phyllis) Schwartz, West Allis, and Edward Schwartz, Milwaukee; and many friends and relatives.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Frances, Clarence and Fredrick Schwartz.
A celebration of life will take place at a later date.
In lieu of flowers and donations, Alice would want you to do a random act of kindness, write a letter, give someone a hug or encouraging word. This is what she will be most remembered for.

Anita A. Bartelt, 91, of Bonduel, passed away on Friday, April 5, 2019, in Shawano. Born on June 16, 1927, in the Town of Oak Grove, Dodge County, she was the daughter of the late Herman and Martha (Blaese) Hinkfuss. Anita was united in marriage to Harry W. Bartelt on June 17, 1950, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Bonduel. Anita worked side by side with Harry on the family farm until retiring in 1992. When Harry developed health problems, Anita acted as his sole caregiver for many years before he passed away on Sept. 12, 2005. Anita loved to tell stories and talk to family and friends over the telephone. Her hobbies included gardening and selling farm fresh eggs from the chickens she raised.
Anita is survived by two daughters, Linda (Jeff) Herrmann and Sharon (Mike) Heling, both of Bonduel; as well as three grandchildren, Nicole (fiance Derek Sherman) Heling, of Janesville, Terilyn (Jake Robles) Heling, of Whitewater, and Aaron Heling, of Bonduel. She is further survived by numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents and siblings, Edward Hinkfuss, Helen Kranz, Alice Booth and Norman Hinkfuss.
A funeral service for Anita was held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, April 9, 2019, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Bonduel with the Rev. Mark Palmer officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation was held at the church on Tuesday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the service.

Laura Jean Prahl, 46, of Gresham, passed away on Thursday, April 4, 2019. Laura was born on Sept. 13, 1972, to Betty Beddard and the late Henry Beddard in Washington, North Carolina. Laura was united in marriage to David Prahl in November 1996 in Waupaca.
Survivors include her husband, David, of Gresham; one son, Josh Olson, of Gresham; two step-daughters, Selena and Sharra Prahl, of New London; six step-grandchildren; her mom, Betty Beddard, of North Carolina; and one sister, Mary (Dana) Silverthorne, of North Carolina.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, April 12, 2019, at Swedberg Funeral Home in Shawano. Burial will be in Gresham Public Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Friday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service.
