Denies La-Rae Wynos “Opay-Taw-Winokey,” 10, of Neopit, started her journey to the Spirit World on Sunday, March 25, 2018, in Green Bay.

Denies was born Nov. 23, 2007, in Milwaukee, a daughter of Dennis and Mary (Waubanscum) Wynos. She attended Keshena Primary School, where she was in the fourth grade. She was a happy little girl who loved camping and ceremonial drums.

Survivors include her parents, Dennis Wynos and Mary Waubanscum, of Neopit; her maternal grandparents, Alfred and Rose Waubanascum, of Neopit; stepsisters, Dallas Hawkins, Diana Marie Wynos, Shaquinn Wynos, Justine Peters and Shanae Wynos; stepbrothers, John Wynos, Jeremy Peters and Gilbert Wynos; her special godsister, Nicole Waubanscum; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

Traditional services for Denies will be held on Wednesday, March 28, 2018, at 10 a.m. at the Zoar Ceremonial Building. Interment will be in the Zoar Burial Ground. Visitation began Monday, March 26, 2018, after 3 p.m. at the Zoar Ceremonial Building and will continue until the time of service.

Alfred S. Hanson, 84, of the Town of Wescott, passed away suddenly on Friday afternoon, March 16, 2018, at ThedaCare Medical Center-Appleton following a brief illness.

Alfred was born Aug. 23, 1933, in the Town of Seneca, Shawano County, a son of the late Simon and Alice (Klund) Hanson. He attended country schools, and later Shawano schools. On Oct. 23, 1951, he entered the United States Marine Corps. Alfred served during the Korean War and was wounded twice, earning the Purple Heart. He was honorably discharged on Oct. 22, 1953. Upon returning from the service, he lived in Milwaukee and worked at Nordberg, Inc.

On Dec. 27, 1958, Alfred was united in marriage to the former Arlene Kunschke at St. Paul Lutheran Church-Stony Hill. The couple settled in Shawano, where Alfred worked at Shawano Paper for 36 years, retiring in 1996. He worked part-time for the Shawano County Sheriff’s Department. Alfred had the privilege of taking an Honor Flight to Washington, D.C.

Survivors include his loving wife of nearly 60 years, Arlene, of the Town of Wescott; his children, James (Sue) Hanson, of Bristol, and Shelly (Frank) Swan, of Shawano; his grandchildren, Stephanie (David) Swan, Michael (Julie) Hanson, Jackie (Steven) Lopes, Cindy (Chris) Nelder, and Sharon (JaVan) Tyler; nine great-grandchildren; his brother, Clarence Hanson of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; and two nephews.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Herman Hanson.

In keeping with Alfred’s wishes, there will be no public visitation or funeral service.

Robert William “Bob” Thorne Jr., born on April 22, 1946, in Shawano to the late Marge Jones Thorne and the late Robert William Thorne Sr. passed away at age 71 on March 22, 2018, at Our Lady of the Lake Hospital in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

He graduated from Nicholls State University. Robert served in the Coast Guard from 1964 to 1970, and he also worked in the Oil Field industry as a country operations manager for Ensco until he retired in 2010.

Robert is survived by his wife of 50 years, Rhea Wiesler Thorne. Robert is also survived by his son, Jason Robert Thorne; daughter, Stephani Erin Thorne; brothers, Rex (Lanell) Thorne and Michael (Debbie) Thorne; and sisters, Yolanda (Milton) Laabs, Renee (Forrest) O’Kimosh and Robin (Gary) Prey. He was preceded in death by a brother, LaDarrow Lee Thorne.

Robert loved playing and watching golf, watching LSU football and baseball, and watching old westerns and Perry Mason. He was the retired treasurer of the Broadmoor Residents Association.

In lieu of flowers, those who wish may donate in Robert’s name to Our Lady of Lake Children’s Hospital or Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center.

A visitation was held Tuesday, March 27, from 5-7 p.m. at Rabenhorst East, 11000 Florida Boulevard, Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Following the visitation, there was a memorial service at 7 p.m.

Sandra Ann (Burmeister) Kempinski, 69, of Shawano, passed away peacefully on Thursday, March 22, 2018, surrounded by loved ones.

Sandra was born on Sept. 6, 1948, in Neenah, the daughter of the late Joseph and Goldie (Starfeld) Babino. She was a lifelong member of the Shullsburg American Legion Auxiliary. She was very active in the community while living in Shawano and her time in Shullsburg. She always enjoyed spending time with her family and her many friends.

Sandra is survived by three daughters, Michelle (Jesse) Malitz, Lisa (Rodney) Krueger, and Tammy Aultman, all of Shawano; two sons, Kenneth Burmeister Jr., of Shawano, and Bryan (Rachael) Burmeister, of Argyle; 14 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and her special friend, Thomas Kempinski.

Willard Arthur Klein, 83, of Shawano, formerly of Suring, passed away on Saturday, March 24, 2018, at home with his family by his side. Born on Sept. 29, 1934, in Two Rivers, the son of the late Arthur and Josephine (Hutchison) Klein. On June 11, 1954, he was united in marriage to Rosemary Long in Manitowoc. Willard enjoyed working on cars, which he made into a career as an auto mechanic; he loved fishing, restoring old homes, watching eagles fly, hummingbirds and all the wild animals that visited his yard. Willard enjoyed spending time with his loving wife, family, and his dog Smokey more than anything. He was a member of St. Martin Catholic Church in Cecil and was very grateful for their kind spiritual care.

Willard is survived by his wife of 63 years, Rosemary; five children, David Klein, Randall (Gloria) Klein, Regina (Jimmy) Prey, Cindy (Scott) Bubolz, and Willard Klein Jr.; 10 grandchildren, Dakota, Anthony, Randall Jr., Derek, Christopher, Jimmy Jr., Jennifer, Jessup, Casey and Matthew; several great-grandchildren; one brother, Dale Klein; and one sister, Bernice Mason.

Johnson, Shirley D. (nee Schmidt), formerly of Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin, and Bonita Springs, Florida, died peacefully on Saturday, March 24, 2018, age 92. Dear wife of 68 years of Jay L. Johnson. Beloved mother of Ann, Thomas (Ann), Allen, and Richard (Nancy). Devoted grandmother of Charles, Benjamin, and Owen Johnson. Further survived by dear sisters-in-law Lily Schmidt and Joan Wenger, nieces and nephews, cousins and friends. Preceded in death by her parents Willmer and Edna Schmidt, and siblings Helen Strehlow and W. Grant Schmidt. Her grandfather, A.A. Schmidt, was a founder of the current Schmidt & Bartelt Funeral Services. Shirley exemplified her family’s dedication of service to others.

Shirley’s faith, family, and music were central to her life. A proud native of Milwaukee, Shirley graduated from Washington High School in 1943 and from North Central College in Naperville, Illinois, in 1947 with a degree in music education. At her first teaching position in Stockton, Illinois, she met her future husband on a blind date. They raised their children in Menomonee Falls where Shirley was an active member of Emmanuel Community United Methodist Church as organist, junior choir director, and lay leader. She created and taught an ecumenical Sunday school class for special needs children. As a talented soprano, organist, and pianist (as well as the granddaughter, daughter, wife, and sister of funeral directors), Shirley was frequently called upon to sing and play at funerals.

Starting with her own community, Shirley was committed to making the world a better place, and worked to support social justice and improve the lives of the most vulnerable in our society. In the 1950s, she and another young mother organized the first UNICEF drive in the Falls. Following the illness of a friend in the 1960s, she established a local chapter of Recovery Inc., a mental health self-help organization. In addition, she organized FISH, an ecumenical organization of over 250 volunteers in seven communities which provided transportation, child care, meals, and emergency services to residents in need.

In later years, Shirley was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church of Bonita Springs, where she sang in the choir, accompanied soloists, served on committees, and forged many deep friendships. Ever the teacher, she tutored migrant workers in learning English. She also volunteered at the Café of Life, serving meals to the homeless and families in need. Feeling strongly that protecting and preserving our environment is crucial, Shirley was also involved in conservation and recycling efforts in Bonita Springs.

The family lake cottage in Wisconsin was an important spiritual retreat for her and she cherished her time at Pine Lake, puttering in her flower garden, bird-watching, baking fruit kuchen, playing Scrabble, meditating, and just being with family. She sought to stay fit with golf, yoga, swimming, biking, and walking.

Shirley was a wise, kind, compassionate, fun-loving, and spirited mother and grandmother, and a loving and devoted wife. She sought to see and encourage the best in everyone. She believed in the power of prayer. She took a keen and sincere interest in people, and was a valued friend to many. She always had time for someone in need and always had time to listen. Shirley possessed a strong and independent spirit and was always game for a new adventure. She taught her children to value – and expected them to practice – the qualities of service, integrity, honesty, kindness, and compassion. Even though some memories were dimmed in recent years, her inner light continued to beam forth brightly with love and gratitude for all her blessings.

Until her last day on Earth, Shirley continued to be joyful, curious, amazed, and delighted by life and the people and experiences around her. She was still drawing people to her and making new friends. By her example, she challenges us to be better citizens, and more loving and expansive souls.

A celebration of Shirley’s life will be held on Saturday, June 2, 2018, at Emmanuel Community United Methodist Church, N84 W16707 Menomonee Ave., Menomonee Falls. Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. until the time of service at noon.

Lawrence W. Moesch, 81, of Shawano, passed away suddenly on Thursday, March 22, 2018, in Shawano.

Larry was born July 28, 1936, a son of the late Oscar and Elaine (Olson) Moesch. He was employed as an over-the-road truck driver his entire career. He loved tinkering in the garage and driving his stock cars. In his later years, Larry enjoyed spending Saturday nights at the stock car races at the Shawano Fairgrounds, rooting for Moesch racing. He also liked to shoot pool.

Survivors include his children, Daniel “Boone” Moesch and Brenda (Todd) Hansen, both of Shawano; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; his life partner, LaDonna Moesch, of Shawano; his brother, Keith “Buck” (Nikki) Moesch, of Shawano; his sisters, Dixie (Don) Mattes, of Marion, and Rita Hansen; and his sister-in-law, Luann Moesch.

Larry was preceded in death by his first wife, Joyce Moesch, in 2000; his son, Andy Moesch in 1996; and his brother, DuLou Moesch in 2009.

Lyle P. Ashenbrenner, 82, of Shawano, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday afternoon, March 28, 2018, in Neenah.

Lyle was born May 26, 1935, in the Town of Pella, Shawano County, a son of the late Matt and Leona (Stickney) Ashenbrenner. He attended country school in Leopolis, and graduated from Marion High School in 1953. On Nov. 20, 1954, he was united in marriage to the former Diane Page at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Shawano. Lyle was employed at Knope Heating and Air Conditioning from 1956 until his retirement in May 1997.
He is a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Shawano. He was a past member of the Shawano Area Fire Department. He enjoyed spending time at his cabin, riding his tractor and gator, and deer hunting. Lyle was a past member of the Leopolis Fish and Game Club. He loved cheering on the Brewers and the Packers.

Chauncey J. Webster Sr., 67, of Neopit, started his journey to the Spirit World late Monday evening, March 26, 2018, in Shawano.

Chauncey was born July 19, 1950, in Shawano, a son of the late James Webster Sr. and Christine (Pierce) Webster. He attended Shawano schools. Following school, he was employed at MTE as a warehouse manager, as a logger, and as a disc jockey. On Sept. 24, 1994, he was united in marriage to Tammy Courchaine in Keshena. Chauncey is a member of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Neopit. His passion was DJing. Chauncey also loved fly fishing. He was an avid Detroit Lions fan, and enjoyed crossword puzzles.

Arline Louise Creapeau, 95, of Gresham, passed away on Friday, March 30, 2018, in Embarrass. Arline was born in Keshena on Aug. 27, 1922, the daughter of the late James and Jane (Sipiecow) Miller. On May 24, 1948, Arline was united in marriage to George Anthony Creapeau in Shawano. George preceded her in death on July 11, 1992. Arline loved gardening, sewing and beading and was also an excellent cook and baker. She made the best pies around and her family looked forward to her fried chicken every Sunday. Arline was a devoted Catholic and spent countless hours reading her Bible. She also had a passion for the theatre and loved attending plays and musicals. A wonderful mother and grandmother, Arline cherished time spent with her family, especially her precious grandchildren.

Arline is survived by six children, Valerie A. Stanczyk, of Custer, Anthony J. (Mary) Creapeau, of Gresham, Norman L. “Louie” Creapeau, of Gresham, Christine M. Smith, of Rhinelander, Clara J. (Guy) Boach, of Rhinelander and David A. Creapeau, of Masonville, Colorado; 15 grandchildren, Jackie, Tony, Dennis, Will, Ryan, Calvin, Joey, Cathy, Neal, Steve, Darrick, Mike, Brian, Kevin and Jacob; numerous great-grandchildren; as well as many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Ralph Bruce Baldwin Jr., 83, of Shawano, passed away on Friday, March 30, 2018, in Shawano. Ralph was born in Shawano on Feb. 4, 1935, the son of the late Ralph and Lillian (Zeman) Baldwin Sr. He served in the United States Navy for four years during the Korean conflict. On April 7, 1956, Ralph was united in marriage to Barbara Barnett. Barbara preceded him in death on Oct. 6, 2005. Ralph retired from Paper Converting in 1997. Whether it was fishing, duck hunting, working outdoors or taking a drive in his car, he was always happy to be outside. Ralph enjoyed playing cribbage at The Launching Pad and playing Word Seek.

Ralph is survived by his children, Ralph (Karen Rentz) Baldwin III, Kevin Lee (Doug Hoffman) Baldwin, Dawn (Ken) Konopka and Patricia (Marvin) Moldenhauer; three grandchildren, Tamara (Jaret Mangus) Baldwin, Amanda (Bradford) Wilson and Andrew (Kelly Berth) Stauber.

Gertrude Hein, 92, of Bonduel, passed away on Saturday, March 31, 2018, in DePere. Born on Nov. 8, 1925, in the Town of Underhill, Gertrude was the daughter of the late Frederick and Laura (Schroeder) Wasmund. A member of one of the first graduating classes from Bonduel High School, Gertrude went on to work at Shawano National Bank for four years and then as a bookkeeper for Westerfeld Oil Company for 30 years. She was united in marriage to Vernon Hein at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Bonduel on Oct. 6, 1946. Vernon preceded her in death in August 1989. Gertrude loved gardening, both vegetables and flowers and was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Bonduel where she was an active member of St. Paul Mission Circle.

Left to cherish Gertrude’s memory are her children, Carol (Tom) Krueger, of Green Bay, and Mark (Barbara) Hein, of Green Bay; five grandchildren, Kate Krueger, Kari (Mark) Williams, Kristen (Tom) Kosman, Kelly (Michael) Schumm and Erich Hein; and eight great-grandchildren, Tyra, Graham, Logan, Dawson, Carson, Jonah, Reagan and Zoe.

Gertrude was preceded in death by her husband, Vernon; a son, Dale Hein; her parents; and her brother, Leonard Wasmund.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, April 6, 2018, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Bonduel with the Rev. Mark Palmer officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held at the church on Friday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the service.

Peggy L. Spanbauer, 62, passed away on Sunday, April 1, 2018 at her home in Oshkosh with her family by her side. She was born Dec. 10, 1955, at Shawano Medical Center, the daughter of the late Clyde and Marjorie (Ringel) Schmidt. Peggy graduated from Gresham High School. She married Dennis Spanbauer on Nov. 29, 1974, at St. Francis Catholic Church in Gresham. Peggy worked for the Oshkosh School District food service for 31 years.

Peggy is survived by and her memory will be cherished by her loving husband, Dennis Spanbauer; three sons, Nicholas (Shawn) Spanbauer, of Oshkosh, Nathan Spanbauer, of Omro, and Neil Spanbauer of Oshkosh; one daughter, Natalie Spanbauer, of Oshkosh; three brothers, Dennis (Dorine) Schmidt, of Tilleda, Dave (Carla) Schmidt, of Greenville, and Andy (Lori) Schmidt, of Gresham; four sisters, Bonnie Schmidt, of Shawano, Kathy (Mark) Kroenke, of Shawano, Kristy (Tim) Paiser, of Gresham, and Karen (John) Peters, of Green Bay; two grandchildren, Jacob and Greyson Spanbauer; and brother-in-law, Greg (Stacie) Spanbauer, of Oshkosh.

Peggy is preceded in death by her parents and brother, Danny Schmidt.

Peggy enjoyed spending time with her family, watching sports, gardening, enjoyed baking chocolate cookies with her grandchildren. She also enjoyed fishing, and her favorite pastime would be putting puzzles together with her daughter, Natalie.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated for Peggy on Saturday, April 7, 2018, at 11 a.m. in Most Blessed Sacrament Parish, St. Peter’s Catholic Church, 435 High Ave. Father Matt Simonar will be the celebrant. A time of visitation will be held on Friday, April 6, 2018, from 4-7 p.m. at Fiss & Bills-Poklasny Funeral Home, 865 South Westhaven Drive, Oshkosh. Visitation will continue on Saturday at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of Mass.
